commissioner: university of cambridge
artist: edmund de waal
Edmund de Waal's commission for the Alison Richards Building, which opened in 2012, celebrates this important new arts and humanities building by Nicholas Hare Architects.
Ceramicist and writer, Edmund de Waal worked with the architects on a project that aims to compliment the architecture and create a dynamic focus for the multiple users of the site and for the public.
'A Local History' comprises of three vitrines containing porcelain vessels sunk into the piazza at the front of the building. The idea behind the project reflects the process of research and the discovery of source material creating a local history.
In addition to the commissioned work the artist gave a wall hung work which was his personal response to the building and its work.
